Power U 13: Coercive Power

The third type of formal power

We are on our 3rd type of power: coercive power 💣. Coercive power is a formal power like the first two types we looked at (positional 👑 and reward ⭐).

In addition to what I talk about in the video, the BC legislature is a great opportunity to look at coercive power right now. With numbers so close on both sides, there is a lot of opportunity for individual MLAs to try to use coercion to get what they want. As noted in the video, coercive power comes with a lot of responsibility: whether or not BC MLAs will heed balancing their quest for power with the level of responsibility we've all placed in them through our votes will have a lot of bearing on how British Columbians judge their actions in this window.

It's a nail-biter in more ways than one and a good illustration of why I think power literacy is a critical skill in the 21st century.
