Power U 79: Your power in elections

Upgrading your power toolkit in storm of elections
White text on a red and black background. Text reads "Power U with Andrea Reimer".

I promised you an episode on how to hold expert power accountable. And I'm sorry but it's going to have to wait one more time because…

➡️ If you're in BC you have two elections, one week apart in October.
➡️ If you're in Ontario, municipal elections October 26th.
➡️ If you're in the US, midterms November 3rd.
➡️ And if you're in Alberta, you're voting on something even more fundamental over the next months, and that is whether to stay in Canada at all.

So many of us are about to make a consequential decision about power that connecting some dots there felt like a better immediate use of your time so that’s where we will be for the next few episodes.

For context: the tool we're using in all of these elections is reward power candidates want your vote and that gives you power over them. In theory.

But here's what four election wins taught me from the other side of the ballot box: when everyone is making the same threat from all sides of every issue, the signals cancel each other out. Reward power is real but it's blunt.

Episode 79 is about what's actually happening when you vote and what a more sophisticated power toolkit in an election looks like.
