Power Lift 7: Understanding Power Through Context

White text on a red and black background. Text reads "Power U with Andrea Reimer".

Did you get a chance to try having a discussion with some friends/family/co-workers about who amongst you is the most powerful?

A few reasons I always start a power training with this exercise:

  • The first one we’ve already talked about. Having people confront the idea that they might have power is a key step in unlearning the myths you’ve been taught about power.
  • When you overcome the first point and start talking about power with peers, you start to become aware of how little language we have to talk about power. What it is, what types there are, how it can be used. That’s a big chunk of what I’ll be talking about over the next number of weeks.
  • Another big myth about power is that some people have it and some don’t. This exercise really daylights that its about context and unless you know the context, and the criteria that matter in that context, there is no way at all to determine who is the most powerful.

What is the context where you feel powerful?
