PowerU 57: Approaches to Power in Politics

Have you ever wondered why some political parties show up at your door and others don't?
White text on a red and black background. Text reads "Power U with Andrea Reimer".

It's not resources. It's not strategy. It's their relationship to power.

There are four basic approaches to power in politics and once you see the difference, you'll never watch an election campaign the same way again.

👑Seize power says: we deserve to be in charge and here is why.
🗣️Advocacy says: we're the experts so let us speak for you.
📢Mobilizing says: we're right, and we want you to validate that.
💬Organizing asks: what do you need, and how can we help?

The door-knocking question is the tell. Are they showing up at all? If they are, are they bringing you their message, or coming to hear yours?

That distinction is one of the most misunderstood dynamics in politics. And if you're watching the federal NDP leadership race playing out in Winnipeg this weekend, the differences in power alignment — not the differences in issues — are what's actually driving this race.

If you're at the convention, or keeping an eye on the outcome, I'd love to hear how you'd place the five candidates.

And if you'd like a deeper dive, you can find a pdf that summarizes Jane McAlevey's comparison of advocacy, mobilizing and organizing at Current Affairs.
