Power Workshops
Tawâw Strategies offers a suite of workshops to help your organization level up its understanding of power and translate that understanding into strong and strategic public policy work. Our offerings all benefit from the Foundation - Power 101 course and can also be tailored to the unique needs and goals of your work. We look forward to talking about how we can help your team build power for good.
1. Foundation – Power 101
Power 101 is our foundational workshop. It is the crucial first step in unlearning what we think we know about power. From there we’ll build a vocabulary to be able to talk about power, and begin to look at ways that people and groups have power and can use it for high-impact public policy work.
Core outcomes for this session:
- Recognize the influence of different types of power in public policy decisions
- Begin to develop a positive relationship with personal power and apply it to your policy-making practice
- Understand how different types of power can be used to catalyze more inclusive conversations
Workshop details
Power 101 is the core of our workshop offerings. It is both a stand alone course and a prerequisite for our other offerings. One add-on that can help integrate the learning into your work is a panel of effective power practitioners with relevance in your field.
Duration: 1.5-2.5 hours

2.1 Power Mapping
This intermediate workshop is for organizations, teams or people with a clear goal or issue they’re working on, and a desire to build their skills to use a strong new power tool to navigate their work. Power Mapping will help boost a team's ability to practically observe power in both formal and informal power structures, and in the community, and translate that observation into a navigable map.
Core outcomes for this session:
- Learn different ways to map power, and figure out which approach best fits which situation.
- Build skills for observing power in context.
Workshop details
In this workshop participants will gain tools to identify key decision makers, assess levels and areas of influence that those decision makers hold, and draw lines between relationships.
Duration: 2 sessions @ 2 hours each (4 hours total)

2.2 Building Powerful Coalitions
This intermediate workshop is for organizations, teams or people with a clear goal or issue they’re working on, and a desire to build effective and power literate relationships beyond the usual suspects. In this training we walk teams through the work of movement building and how different models build capacity for action and the skills and approaches that sustain coalitions.
Core outcomes for this session:
- Learn to tell the difference between building a movement and building an army, and why one lasts while the other doesn't.
- Build skills for how to read where a movement is and what approach and role each phase benefits most from.
- Try out strategy and trust-building tools to set up your coalition work for success.
Workshop details
In this workshop participants will develop understanding of their individual and/or organizational role in relation to your goal, understanding what phase the work on this issue is in, how to build trust and what to do when you can't but need to work together anyway.

3.1 The Power Game
The Power Game is a role-playing game designed to help you develop power literacy and integrate that learning into your work in the community. We'd love to play it with you. In our experience this is the fastest and most effective way to make power literacy learning concrete for people.
Core outcomes for this session:
- Put your power learning into practice by using influence to reach your objectives in a live decision.
- Read the room in real time, try out different tools and adjust your approach as the decision unfolds.
- Reflect on what worked, what didn't, and what you'll carry into your own practice.

This day-long session offers a deep and powerful experience for participants to practice their new skills in a practical exercise that mimics real world scenarios.
